GuideGet started

Open Context has two entry points. Most people start with one and add the other.

Chrome extension

The fastest way to build up your Library. Install it once, then save pages and selections as you browse.

Full setup walkthrough: Chrome extension

The short version:

  1. Install from the Chrome Web Store
  2. Generate an API key in Settings → API Keys
  3. Paste the key into the extension Options page
  4. Right-click anything on the web and choose Save to Open Context

Connect your assistant

Once you have content in your Library, connect your AI assistant so it can retrieve it.

Open Context is listed in both the Claude and ChatGPT catalogs, so there’s nothing to paste or configure.

Full setup walkthrough: Claude · ChatGPT

The short version:

  • ClaudeSettings → Connectors → Add → Browse connectors, search OpenContext, click Connect.
  • ChatGPTPlugins, search Open Context, click Install Plugin.

Sign in to Open Context when prompted. That’s it.

Using a different assistant? Any MCP-capable client can connect by URL — see Any MCP client.

What’s worth doing on day one

Open Context retrieves what you’ve saved. An empty Library still feels useless even with a live connection — save a few things first.

Save something. Use the extension or paste directly into opnctx.ai. A few items is enough to feel the difference.

Write a profile. Go to Profiles and write a short brief — your role, how you work, what you want assistants to know about you. This is what get_profile loads at the start of a session.

Ask for what you saved. Once connected, ask “What was the last thing I stashed?” or “Search my library for [topic].” Seeing it work is the moment it clicks.
